Official Rules & Structure
Complete guidelines for the Yeti Claw Classic and all Utah Elite Hockey tournaments.
- •All players must be 18 years or older
- •Full hockey equipment is mandatory (helmet with cage/shield, gloves, shin guards, elbow pads, pants, etc.)
- •Teams must wear matching jerseys with visible numbers
- •Roster limit: 9 players total (including goalie)
- •Players may only play on one team for the duration of the event
- •Photo ID required at check-in
- •All games are played 3v3 cross-ice on mini-rinks
- •Games consist of two 14-minute periods, running clock at all times
- •One 30-second timeout per team per game
- •Quick shifts are recommended to maintain pace of play
- •Captains must have their team ready to take the ice immediately when their rink opens
All games will end in a tie at regulation except for playoff and championship games.
For playoff and championship games, if a game is tied at the end of regulation:
- •A 3-minute sudden-death overtime will be played (still 3-on-3)
- •If still tied after overtime, the game will go to a three-shooter shootout, followed by sudden-death rounds if needed
Note: Regular round-robin games that are tied at the end of regulation will remain as ties and each team will be awarded 1 point.
- •Standard USA Hockey non-checking rules apply
- •Fighting is strictly prohibited — result is player ejection from the tournament
- •A game misconduct results in at least a one-game suspension
- •Excessive roughness, dangerous play, or disrespect toward officials, staff, or other players may result in removal from the tournament
- •Officials' decisions are final
- •No roster additions once the event begins
- •All players must sign waivers before playing
- •Teams using ineligible players may forfeit games or be removed from the tournament
- •Captains and players must check in 45 minutes before their scheduled first game each day
- •IDs and waivers will be verified at check-in
The Yeti Claw Classic is a three-day 3v3 tournament featuring round-robin play followed by playoff brackets. Because team numbers vary by division, the final game count and bracket layouts will be determined once registration closes. All teams will receive a minimum of 6 games throughout the weekend.
Day 1 – Friday (Opening Round Robin)
- All divisions begin round-robin play
- Each team plays 2 games
- All games take place between 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Points system:
- Win = 2 points
- Tie = 1 point
- Loss = 0 points
Note: To avoid schedule disruption, games will not go to overtime on Day 1. Ties will stand.
Day 2 – Saturday (Final Round Robin + Playoff Seeding)
- Each team plays 2 additional round-robin games
- Final standings determine playoff seeding
- Divisions are seeded into playoff brackets based on total points
- All games remain within the 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM block
Day 3 – Sunday (Championship Day)
- Semifinals and Championship games for each division
- Consolation games for remaining teams
- Championships conclude by 12:00 PM
- Awards ceremony follows the final game in each division
Overtime Rules on Championship Day
Because overtime would push games behind schedule, the following applies:
- Round-robin games: no overtime — ties stand
- Playoff games:
- 2-minute sudden-win OT
- If still tied: shootout (3 shooters, then sudden-death)
This keeps the tournament on schedule.
Tiebreakers for Seeding
If teams are tied in points after round-robin play, the following tiebreakers apply:
- Head-to-head result
- Goals For (max +8 per game to prevent running up scores)
- Goals Against
- Goal Differential
- Coin flip
Key Notes
- Final game times and brackets depend entirely on the number of teams in each division.
- All teams are guaranteed meaningful gameplay throughout the weekend.
- Updated schedules will be sent to captains no later than December 31.
- Any tie-breaking or overtime procedures are designed intentionally to avoid delaying the schedule.
